Breast Augmentation Placement Options
If you’ve started doing research on breast implants, you’ve probably uncovered several big decisions that you and your surgeon will need to make before the actual procedure for your breast augmentation. Omaha women will have to think through things like implant size, silicone versus saline implants, and even where to place the incision. But one of the other major decisions that you’ll need to make is where the implant will be placed: over the chest muscle or underneath it. In this blog post, we’ll look at both of these options as well as their pros and cons. If you have any questions about breast augmentation or if you’re ready to schedule your preliminary consultation, call Dr. Ayoub today at (402) 829-6384. Over the Muscle vs. Under the Muscle
With breast augmentation, Omaha patients typically want to get larger breasts and more cleavage without having a “fake” or unnatural look afterwards. To say this is a difficult choice is an understatement. However, one of the factors that will go into how the implants will look is where the breast implant is placed: over the chest muscle, or underneath it. Let’s take a look at each option.
Over the Muscle (Subglandular)
The term subglandular refers to the glandular tissue of the breast. In this placement option, Dr. Ayoub places the breast implant on top of the chest muscle but underneath the breast tissue. This offers several advantages.
- The recovery time is easier because the chest muscles are not touched.
- When the chest muscle is contracted, the implants won’t move or get “squeezed” which can distort their appearance.
There is one big caveat for over-the-muscle placement during breast augmentation: Omaha patients that do not have enough breast tissue may not be good candidates. The patient needs to have enough tissue to cover the implant and avoid seeing “rippling” on the sides of the breasts–usually around a B cup.
Under the Muscle (Submuscular)
For this option, Dr. Ayoub places the implants underneath the chest muscle. Again, this offers several advantages.
- Can deliver more natural results because there is more tissue covering the implant: the muscle and the breast tissue.
- More tissue over the implant also reduces the risk of seeing rippling on the sides.
