What is “Drop and Fluff” and What Effect Will that have on the Appearance of My New Breasts?
Getting plastic surgery, like a breast augmentation in Omaha, is a process, not an event. Even though the actual breast augmentation surgical procedure only takes a few hours, and you can generally return to your normal activities in Omaha in a few weeks, it can take several months for your breasts to heal fully. Your implants must settle, and the swelling in your breasts must go down. Additionally, your muscles must relax. Because of this, it can take several months to a year for you to see your final results. When it comes to breast augmentation surgery, “drop and fluff” is a layman term that refers to this process of breast implants fully healing before you see your ultimate results. Continue reading as Omaha Dr. Ayoub of Westfield Plastic Surgery Center explains the healing process from breast augmentation surgery, and how the phenomena casually referred to as “drop and fluff” will affect your final results.
The Breast Augmentation Process
When you undergo breast augmentation in Omaha, you will be given anesthesia to make you fall asleep. Then you’ll receive one of four incision types: an inframammary fold incision underneath the breast, a periareolar incision around the bottom curve of the nipple, a trans-axillary incision under the armpit or a trans-umbilical incision through the belly button. Once the incision is made a silicone or saline breast implant will be inserted, placed, and in the case of a trans-umbilical incision, inflated. While breast augmentation is a routine, safe surgical procedure, it does cause trauma to the breast area and does immediately create swelling and bleeding.
Swelling After Breast Augmentation Surgery
Because your body experiences a trauma after breast augmentation surgery, your breasts will immediately begin to swell. Don’t worry. This is normal. You can expect your breasts to be swollen for 6-8 weeks, which of course makes it difficult for you to predict what your final results will look like until after the swelling subsides. While your breasts are swollen, you may notice that they are fuller at the top of the breast. This, too, is normal, and will go away with time.
Implant Settling
Immediately after your Omaha breast augmentation surgery, your implants will be very high and in an unnatural position. Over time, anywhere from 6 to 12 months, your pectoral muscles will relax, and your implants will drop lower into a more natural position on your chest. This is where the “drop” comes from the layman term “drop and fluff.” Sometimes, your doctor might recommend a particular breast massage to help implants settle symmetrically. If you have been instructed to massage your breast implants, make sure you follow your doctor’s orders for the best-looking results.
Achieving Your Final Results
Because every patient is different, it’s hard to say when you will be able to see your final results from your breast augmentation surgery. It all depends on when your swelling has decreased, which can take up to two months, and when your implants have finally settled into their natural-looking position, which can take up to a year.
